Technical Writing for the Terrified

Introduction

Sometimes it may be beyond a companies or individuals budget to hire a professional writer to address their technical documentation. Although in an ideal world all technical documentation should be produced by a highly trained expert, unfortunately we do not live in an ideal. In the same way that many people will attempt to repair their own home appliances, many people will attempt to write quality technical documents. Just as fiddling with a toaster can result in electrocution, attempting to write technical documents from scratch without prior advice will ultimately result in failure. As a rough rule of thumb you should always seek to employ a specialist, but if for whatever reason you can't and you are the poor unfortunate that has had documentation duties foisted on them, don't despair. This brief guide outlines some of the core skills you will need to bring to your writing, technical conventions to be aware of, software packages you can consider, and definite things to avoid. Hopefully even if you have never written a sentence in your life about anything vaguely technical you will have at the very least, a broader picture of what technical writing entails.

What is Technical Writing?

Technical writing unsurprisingly enough, refers to writing that is technical. Although this may seem like a fallacious definition, it's an important one to remember. Too many technical authors make the mistake of creating documentation that is either too technical, or too 'literary'. A good technical author should be able to adjust the balance between the two to suit the end user of the documentation. Technical writing is a lot like fresh air, pervasive and yet pretty much invisible. In the weird wired world in which we find ourselves, technical writing is everywhere. Software manuals, user guides for home appliances, instructional leaflets, emails, letters, reports, technical news reports, statistics and biographies on television sports shows all are examples of technical writing to which people are exposed to on a daily basis. If you have ever tried to program the time settings on a home video recorder and flung the manual across the room in disgust, you threw a piece of technical writing (although obviously not a very good one!).

Too many times technical literature is produced by writers with not a large enough grasp of technology, or technologists that lack an ability to write. As a prospective technical author you must tread the very delicate line of being technically knowledgeable in your specialist field(s) as well as being a 'good' writer (as opposed to 'bad' writers who can usually be found mugging sweet old ladies or something). Technical documentation is usually produced for two distinct user groups, namely expert level users, and naive users. As a technical author one of your first tasks is to sort out what audience you are writing for, which brings me deftly to:

Know thy foe

As the old cliché goes, everyone's a critic. This is particularly true of most sane people's reaction when faced with technical writing. As was highlighted in the example of the video recorder above, technical writing can be impenetrable to the end user. If this is the case, it is because whoever wrote the documentation, didn't bother to identify their audience and write to their level. It seems an obvious point to make, but one that is often overlooked, that the user of the documents your are creating, may not actually be an expert. Obviously if you are creating a document on a particular specialist product for a particular advanced user group (a good example could be auditing software for computer system administrators) then you will need to compose this is an entirely different way than if you are creating for example, a technical manual for mass market computer software aimed at the inexperienced home user. One of the first tasks you must accomplish before you even put pen to paper, of finger to keyboard, is to identify who the user of your documents will be and construct documents aimed at that particular target group(s). If you get this stage correct, it should avoid your documents being thrown across rooms in annoyance!

Planning for perfection

Once you have identified the target market for the documents you will be creating, you will need to start to plan how the documents will be organised. This process is largely dependent on what documentation is being produced, but you can follow a few rough rules of thumb. Firstly, if the documents are to support a particularly detailed product (such as a computer application) get your grubby hands on it as quickly as you can. By examining the product in detail you can formulate a plan of attack and begin to compose an organisational structure. Whilst you are exploring the product in detail, take copious notes, as doing this during the initial exploratory stages can save you time which can be absolutely vital if you are working to deadline. Even at the planning stage you must ensure there is a consistency to layout, and organisational structure for the document. Select numbering conventions, paragraph styles, and generate rough ideas for layout purposes now, and save vital time later.

Let a Draft in

Before diving headfirst into creating the documentation, draft out each section first. This will allow to reorder if the documents being created do not have a logical 'flow' without seriously having impact on the project. Many technical documents (especially for more detailed products) are made up of numerous (and in some cases practically countless) iterations. This is because the product shifts and changes over time, and one of the principal duties of a technical author is to keep abreast of these changes, and to ensure that they are all well documented. Good technical authors will always push their documents through as many drafts as humanly possible, refining on each draft, until they reach a position whereby they (and their employer) is satisfied that the documentation is timely, accurate and a true reflection of the product or process it documents.

The devil is in the detail

As already identified, technical writing is called that because it is technical in nature. Part of being technical is to be precise, and part of precision is to be as detailed as humanly possible. Even if the documents you are creating are for an advanced and technologically sophisticated user group, your documentation must focus on the details of a process, or in using a product. This can be a difficult feat to accomplish, but not if you write to your audience. Never assume that the reader knows anything about the product or process be documented, but in the case of advanced / expert users at least have the common sense to recognise the fact that they probably do not need to be told how to use the equipment they operate on a daily basis. When describing how to carry out a particular activity or task, identify each stage involved (number them if this fits the conventions of the document type you are creating) and to ensure the accuracy of what you have written test it yourself, or even better, rope in a volunteer of the same skills level as the end user.

Choose the right tool for the job

Although it is possible to create technical documents using parchment and blood, it's not advisable. Many specialist software applications exist to help you create powerful documentation, and part of your duties as a technical author, include selecting the right tool for the job. Largely this depends on the nature of the documents being produced, and the nature of their eventual distribution. If the documents can be delivered using the Internet, this is certainly an avenue to consider. To that end make use of packages such as Flash MX and Dreamweaver to achieve this goal. For integrated online help, you may wish to create raw HTML documents, or alternatively select a specialist package such as RoboHelp or similar. In the case of print based documents, you will need to select a software package powerful enough to handle what you will throw at it.

Many inexperienced technical authors instantly turn towards Microsoft Word (as it is ubiquitous in may commercial and private environments). Unless your documentation is going to be beneath 150 pages, and you know how to create templates and make macros, avoid MS Word. As any technical author will tell you it has nasty habits all it's own, and can often be an unstable package to work with. If you are creating graphics heavy documentation, you may wish to consider Quark Xpress, or choose potentially the industry leader in the field, Adobe Framemaker. Whatever software you select, you must ensure you become incredibly proficient with it, either by investing in training, or by using it day after day after day!

Communicate - that's what you are paid to do!

Many people will tell you that creating technical documentation is tedious and repetitive. These people, are wrong, and possibly morons too. Although you may find the process of creating technical documentation 'boring' (if you do you are in the wrong job!) it isn't. Creating quality technical documents is a vital stage in allowing people to adequately and correctly use technology. Although no user will approach the documentation you create in the same way as they approach a novel, you can ultimately help them achieve what they want to achieve using technology. No matter how 'dull' the process may appear to be, allowing users to achieve their goals by reading your documents should give you a rush of pride and indeed, happiness. As long as you remember the positive effects that technology can have on people's lives, when you create your documents you can communicate more effectively, as you will be happier in the communicative process. Throughout the documentation life cycle, you should seek to liaise with colleagues as often as possible (if applicable). Let them read your documents, listen to their criticisms, and adjust your documents (if you can't argue your corner!). A technical author is paid to communicate, make sure that you do, and never forget why your are communicating, and to whom, in the documents themselves.

Common Mistakes to avoid making

When creating technical documents there are a number of fatal flaws you can make. Although by no means exhaustive, this section details some of the more common mistakes new authors make, in the hopes that you will avoid making them too:

Being Patronising - Although technical documentation should be clear, it should never be patronising. You are not creating documents to be read by morons but consumers and clients. You should always write to the skills level of your audience, but no matter what technical level people are on, they are not morons. Even children get offended when patronised, don't make that mistake with someone who is paying your salary, child or otherwise.

Overuse of humour - People do not read technical documents to be entertained, they read them in the hopes of successfully completing a process, or extracting information. Unless it is relevant to the end user, avoid humour wherever possible. If you are writing a book, fine and good. If you are writing a manual, avoid humour like the plague, as more often than not users will miss the joke and just end up loathing the patronising idiot that wrote the documentation.

Inconsistency - Even at the drafting stage, you should ensure that all the elements used in your document are consistent. This applies as much to the 'tone' of the document as to the layout of it. Ensure you use consistent senses (first person, etc.) as well as page layout, pagination elements, headers and footers, and all other textual elements.

Proof read - By the end of creating a piece of technical documentation, you will probably be sick of the sight of it. That doesn't matter. What matters is what leaves your office or home, is accurate. To that end proof read the document throughout all it's drafts, and before it is distributed proof read it again, and again, and again. Never rely on spell checkers (they never work) and if you can avoid it, never rely solely on your own judgement. Get your document read by as many pairs of eyes as possible prior to distribution, after all, they could spot the one thing you have been missing throughout the creation process.

Conclusion / Shameless self promotion

Technical writing is not regardless of what you may think, an easy job. It requires expertise, patience and a very odd mixture of skills. Just like any other job, you can learn how to do it, but even that tuition will not necessarily make you any good at it. To be a good technical author, you have to be anal yet creative, focussed yet communicative, and a flexible expert. This, as you can probably imagine, is no simple task. Although you may think creating technical documents is easy, creating accurate, consistent and timely documentation to a high commercial standard is a highly challenging role. Regardless of your budget, in the long run it will provide significant ROI if you hire a specialist. After all, they will be able to do in days, what you tear your hair our attempting to accomplish in weeks if not months.

Fashion Tip: Don't Make These Fashion Mistakes

1. Wearing the Wrong Colors

To look your best wear clothing colors that will complement your skin. Wearing the wrong colors will make your skin appear sallow and lines and wrinkles will be more evident. The right colors will make you look more vibrant and healthy.

2. Wearing too much makeup

Too much makeup will make lines appear deeper and will create a harsh look. Keep makeup light for day and a little darker for evening. See a professional if you are unsure of makeup application techniques.

3. Wearing Clothes that are too small

Wearing clothes that fit too tightly will make you appear larger. Wearing clothes that do not suit your body type will make you appear larger. Buy clothes that suit your body type - not someone else's.

4. Chipped nail polish

The idea of nail polish is to make your nails appear nicer. Chipped polish just brings attention to poor grooming.

5. An old-fashioned hairstyle or messy hair

Your hairstyle creates a first impression. From your hairstyle people will assume your education level, status, age etc. This doesn't mean the judgments are correct - they happen instinctively. Make sure it doesn't happen to you. Visit your hairstylist regularly.

6. Messy Shoes or wrong shoes for your outfit

Take care of your shoes they complete your look. Also pay attention that your complement your outfit.

7. Roots that show

If you colour your hair make sure you keep it maintained regularly.

8. Bras and bra straps that show

When wearing sleeveless tops make sure you wear a racer back bra. Don't wear bras that fit too tightly or don't have good support.

9. Mismatched hose

Match your hose with your shoes or with your pants or skirt.

10. Wearing inappropriate clothes

When in a working environment make sure that your clothes are not flashy (unless you are in a creative field) do not wear short skirts, (more than 3 inches above the knee) sleeveless tops, plunging necklines, stilettos, too much jewelry, leather pants or skirts, or anything that shimmers.

Some Great Methods to Promote Your Site

Even though your site has a beautiful design and high quality content, but if there is no visitor, your site is useless. If you are an online business person and there is no one visiting your site, you may end up in ruin. To avoid this terrible thing to happen, you need to promote your website. It should not be denied that site promotion is a little bit hard task to accomplish. But if you succeed, many benefits await you. Below are some excellent methods to promote your website.

Social Networking

These days, there are many social networking sites to help you market your website. One of the most popular sites is Facebook. This social media website has millions of users. You can create an account on Facebook and then start adding friends. You know, many small online businesses become huge businesses because of the help of Facebook. On Facebook, you can meet thousands of potential customers. Twitter is another popular social networking site that may also help you promote your website. These two sites do not charge you any fee.

Posting on Other Websites

Guest posting is one of the greatest methods to boost your traffic. You can start selecting some websites that are relevant to your website. The next step you should take is to contact the website owners or administrators to find out whether or not you can publish your articles there. After that, you need to write original and quality articles. These articles play a significant role in driving traffic to your site. That is why it is necessary for you to make relevant articles. You can put a link that lead people to your own site at the bottom of every article you publish.

Email Marketing

Many webmasters consider email marketing is one of the best methods in promoting websites. This action can lead you to gain many benefits if you do it correctly. It is not recommended to send many emails to one person. If you send too many emails to a person, you will be considered as a spammer.

What makes email marketing great is that you are allowed to build personal relationships with your customers. These relationships should be well-maintained. When your customers trust you, there is a big opportunity that they will buy your products and services.

It is true that there are more methods you can take to promote your website. But these three strategies are the most powerful methods to make your site popular.

3 Simple Rules For Your Next Sales Call

The other day I received a call from a telemarketer selling a website "starter kit" for small businesses. If you are reading this right now, then you undoubtedly know that I have a website. Normally, I would quickly get the telemarketer off the line so I could get back to showing people how to make more money. But this call got my attention because I thought that this might be a potential service that I could recommend to my clients. So I decided to listen to this sales pitch to evaluate the offering and the approach that the telemarketer used.

Well the rep started by going straight into a sales pitch. She was using the age-old technique of trying to complete her benefits-loaded-sales-pitch before I knew what hit me. This technique is very similar to television, radio, or print advertising where if you show your ad to enough people with a pulse, then you will eventually find a few people who actually need the service.

Instead of getting annoyed with the sales rep, I decided to have fun with the call. Once she was done with her somewhat lengthy pitch, I asked her "Do you have any idea what I even want?" Well of course, she did not because she had not asked me a single question. I could tell during her pitch that she was tense by the sound of her voice. So I started to ask her questions about the service. She answered my questions very well. I noticed by her voice that she was getting more relaxed and comfortable by my asking questions of her. I guessed that she likely was thinking that she had a buyer or a hot-prospect on the line.

Once I had asked enough questions, I told the rep that this service was not for me as I already have my own website (through the conversation, she never asked this critical, obvious question). I told her that I would keep her service in mind for clients that might need a website starter kit. I could tell that she was distressed. She tried a final closing attempt on me by pleading "Well, don't you want to at least try it out?" I said "No way - do you have any idea what a pain the a%$ changing web hosting services is?"

Lest you think of me as cruel for wasting this poor sales rep's time, I remind you that as buyers we do this to salespeople everyday when we consider making a purchase. Have you ever asked many questions of a salesperson only to go home, think over the decision, and then never buy the product? Many salespeople and entrepreneurs put up with this behavior from prospects because they exhibit this behavior themselves when making purchases.

QUESTION: Who was in control of the sales call? ANSWER: The prospect (me). QUESTION: Why didn't I buy? ANSWER: Because I had no pain that the service could fulfill.

If the seller had followed these 3 simple rules, she could have been on to the next suspect on her list, instead of wasting 20 minutes on a no-sale conversation:

Ask questions first to find a pain to solve. If no pain, then move one to the next suspect! Don't give away free consulting. Keep your leverage until you know that the prospect is likely to buy your product or service. When you find pain, leverage this to make the sale. People will pay a lot of money for the things that they really want.

Too many companies don't invest in the best for their sales-people. They expect you to be already trained in sales or a "natural". Well naturals aren't born, they are made. If your company isn't investing in you, then invest in yourself. People who truly make things happen, are willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want.

Why Weight Train During Pregnancy?

There was once a time that a pregnant woman was thought of as "fragile". Any form of exercise was strictly prohibited by doctors and feared by concerned fathers. We've now come to realize that a pregnant woman is capable of doing nearly everything that every other woman is capable of doing (and even most men).

It is now recommended that women participate in prenatal exercise programs because of the benefits during labor and delivery as well as the postnatal benefits to moms and babies.

Why Weight Train?

Women who weight train throughout their pregnancy benefit from less weight gain during pregnancy and return to their pre-pregnancy weight, strength, and flexibility levels faster than women who remain inactive or who only participate in cardio programs.

Weight training increases a woman's energy levels throughout her pregnancy and helps prevent loss of bone density postpartum.

The babies born to women who weight trained during their pregnancy are born with ideal birth weights. Prenatal weight training is the first step in ensuring that your child has a healthy start in life!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Decreased Risks Associated with Prenatal Weight Training:

o Decreases in the severity and frequency of low back pain during pregnancy

o Decreased risk of gestational diabetes

o Decreased risk of delivering post term or through caesarean delivery

o Fewer complications during delivery; including fetal distress

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Pregnancy Precautions

Although not feeble, fragile, and frail, pregnant women should be aware of certain precautions that are unique to them and their bodies.

Be sure to consult your doctor before beginning an exercise program or continuing an exercise program after the first trimester. Your goal should be to simply maintain highest level of fitness while ensuring your safety and the safety of your baby.

Every muscle group should be targeted and the following should be emphasized: inner thigh, hamstrings, glutes, upper back, and shoulders.

Pregnant women should avoid lifting the amount of weight that they were capable of lifting pre-pregnancy. Be sure to use low resistance. StrollerFit classes utilize therabands and exertubes to provide the perfect balance of resistance and safety.

Use caution when stretching either before or after an exercise session. Joint laxity is increased during pregnancy due to the increased amounts of the hormones elastin and relaxin that are being produced. Joint laxity is the amount of movement the ligaments allow through the joint and during pregnancy the joints can be easily stressed or strained.

Movements to Avoid

o Avoid exercises that require bending from the hips

o Avoid exercises in the supine position after the first trimester due to increased pressure on the arteries surrounding the heart

o Avoid overhead lifting

o Avoid straining or holding the breath

Getting Started

Before beginning an exercise program or continuing an exercise program past the first trimester, be sure to consult your doctor. You may may want to join a group exercise program specializing in pre- and postnatal fitness such as StrollerFit or you may choose to exercise on your own. Many books are available to help guide you through exercise and pregnancy safely and effectively. A good place to start is 'Exercising Through Your Pregnancy" by James Clapp. Resistance bands and tubing can be purchased at your local sporting goods store or online at http://www.strollerfit.com.

Every woman hopes to have a healthy and safe pregnancy. Through prenatal weight training you can increase the chances that both you and your child remain healthy and safe though pregnancy, labor, and delivery!

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

It is recommended that women with the following conditions DO NOT EXERCISE: Consult your doctor!

o Pregnancy induced high blood pressure

o Pre-term rupture of the membrane

o Pre-term labor during the prior or current pregnancy

o Incompetent cervix

o Persistent second to third trimester bleeding

o Intrauterine growth retardation

o Joint laxity due to increased amounts of elastin and relaxin

o Increased basal metabolic temperature

Learning the Basics of Estate Planning

Like many legal tools, estate planning can seem like a mystery to most people. But when used properly, it can be a very valuable tool for people from all walks of life. You don't need to have a huge estate or billions of dollars in the bank to benefit from a well-made estate plan. So here I've decided to write about some of the basic things you'll need to know about wills, trusts, and the rest of the gang. Hopefully, this will give you a clearer idea of what it's all about and how you can use it to your advantage.

Let's start with some of the most basic questions about this legal invention.

What is Estate Planning?

Estate planning refers to the process of establishing arrangements for the management and disposal of your properties in anticipation of death or disability. It employs a number of devices, including wills, trusts, and powers of attorney - all of which are used to give you some degree of control over decisions that others might make involving your estate or your medical treatment in instances wherein you are no longer capable of making those decisions yourself.

What do I need to do?

There are some differences between states when it comes to the devices that you may use for your estate plan. In California, for example, you can use what is called an advance health care directive which will outline your instructions for your future health care. Other states, on the other hand, may use a "living will" in place of an advance health care directive.

Each device needs to conform to specific legal requirements that are set by each state, and it's absolutely crucial to comply with such requirements otherwise your will or other estate planning device might be considered as invalid. Because of the many differences and requirements, it's very important, therefore, to get quality legal assistance in the preparation of your will or living trust.

When should I start?

A number of people mistakenly believe that they only need to plan their estate when they're already approaching old age or have been diagnosed with a serious illness. The truth is that it's never too early to start building your estate plan. Many unforeseen events such as disasters and accidents can happen at any time, and it's best to have an estate plan as early as possible. This is especially true when you already have young children and other loved ones depending on you for support.

At the end of the day, estate planning is vital for your own peace of mind. A well-built estate plan will give you the assurance that your loved ones will be properly supported should anything happen to you. It will also help you ensure that decisions regarding your property and your health will be made in accordance with your own wishes and plans.

Get Paid To Advertise So You Could Get More Stuff!

Are you like millions of others who are trying to figure out all the mumbo jumbo about making a living running your own business? If you are you have probably heard some buzz about how to get paid to advertise. Yes, you read that right. You can get paid just to place your advertisements in the right places.

Of course, everyone knows that it pays to advertise, and that has been true ever since the first human understood that they could sell what they had to someone else who needed it. However, back then it was more like bartering.

When you think of it, you do get paid to advertise every time you make a sell of any kind. Another thing you can think about is that selling really is a type of bartering. Whether we pay money for a product or simply trade one thing for another we are simply exchanging one item of value for another.

Money is valuable and so are all the things you can buy with it, so the discussion is not whether or not we are bartering or selling, but whether or not we are getting the most for what we give.

This of course is all a matter of perspective, and yours and my perspective may not be the same. However, we can assume that everyone wants the most for what we spend, and that means that we have to find the best ways of generating the things we barter with.

We have to figure out the most effective way to get paid to advertise. For me that means that if I can double the return on my investment often enough I should be able to see a great profit. That makes it possible to barter for more and better stuff, right?

That is the name of the game isn't it, getting more and better stuff for yourself and your family. For some it is simply getting enough. One way to do either or both of those is to get paid to advertise. Now, that sounds like a spit and a promise for sure, but there is a method of getting paid just for allowing others to post your advertisements for you.

Yes, most businesses do pay to advertise, and that is effective, but if you could pay to advertise and then get paid in return for that advertisement wouldn't you do it? That would mean that you would have more money to barter with to get more stuff.

A Look into Sociology

Sociology is an intricate study of humankind on many forms. Whether it be focused on the individual, the family, or a city, sociology takes an in depth look at humanity itself and analyzes it from many different angles. These are just a few examples of how sociology can analyze the subject. This article will examine six significant factors and give a better look on sociology itself.

First there are general basics. Sociology has its roots in the Enlightenment. With the want for more information, more understanding of the world, man started to focus on the very thing he created himself: society. Humankind began to analyze everything and anything that they could. It wasn't surprising when they started to really analyze themselves. This, in a way, is what sociology is. Sociology is the study of human behavior, from its origins to its evolutions. It is the analysis of the development of mankind.

With the increase in human development, there became a higher variety of human-life. It changed form as it moved across the world, from rural to urban, from one religion to another, from one race to another. This is why sociology is important to the world. It breaks down all the information and reorganizes it most effectively.

Sociology is a science like many others, though it is quite different in the same way. Closest to it might be psychology, though different on many levels. What makes sociology an unique science is its focus on humanity. Though seemingly easy at first, after a good look one can recognize the complex behavior of mankind that has evolved over thousands of years from having a society. This makes sociology important both to the present and the future, for it takes what has happened in the past and present and uses the information effectively in understanding groups, individuals, and society itself.

Like a science, there are many different ways one can study and record this information. Surveys are one of the major ones. There are also observational studies and experiments. Sociological experiments can be like other scientific ones, with variables for scientific research, but lots of the times the answers aren't so simple. It takes a good eye and mind to analyze the data, making sociology a more delicate process in the long run.

The second item to focus on is culture. Culture is the grouping of specific mindsets that have developed over time in certain parts of the world, allowing any scientist or onlooker to realize general differences between groups and make general recognitions this way. Thus said, it is an important factor to take into account when dealing with sociological information. There are so many different cultures in the world that they act like variables in giant analytic experiments for the sociologist.

Culture can be broken down into many different aspects or parts. One important one to note is language. Language both creates barriers and brings worlds together. Different languages cause speed bumps in scientific or any form of study throughout the world. It is but one way people can be so different from each other. But the very act of language, or the development of it both psychologically and historically have a strong impact on sociology. It brings insight further into the culture of the people being studying and allows the sociologist more key and individual information. Almost like religion and politics, language has a unique way of developing that reflects both on the culture and history of those that use it, finding its roots being mixed and interwoven like many of the people who make use of it.

A third important item to focus on is the social structure. The social structure is the creation of different levels in society throughout the world to better define and understand how society itself works. It is not man made in that people can decide how many layers there are to society or the different reactions between different levels. It is an evolution of society itself, changing from culture to culture or place to place.

Social structure can be broken down into looking at society as having different statuses and different roles. Individuals are not all equal as much as humankind would like to think it sometime. Through hard work, misfortune, or pure luck people find themselves on different levels of society compared to the person standing next to them or even the person they were a month, week, or day ago. Status can be looked at as the person's worth through society's eyes. People tend to use this as the way to judge others quickly. Though not necessarily negative in that there are different statuses, it has for the most part been associated with a negative, almost snooty view when used to analyze others. Role is much deeper, though, and can defy status in many different ways. While status can be looked at as almost just a term or some physical measurement of humans in society, the role is a much deeper, more personal experience. This is to say that it is not so clear what everyone's role is on first glance. Through careful study and critiquing, one could evaluate another or a whole group and come to a logical assumption or even answer to what their role is, but for the most part it is more of a show and tell kind of deal. It is not evident always, nor is the level of evidence equal from one to another. Simply, it is the bond that an individual has with society, telling their purpose on how they hold the society together.

A good part of culture, sociology, and society are groups. Not everything is on the individual level. The size of the group affects the effectiveness of productivity. Too small of a group might lead to too many unanswered questions, while too large could grow so complex that many overlooked factors have been uncounted for. The perfect size, this balance between small and large, between answerable and countable, is not clear. It is dependent on the answers and topic that is being questioned at the time. One might need a large group to make references about a whole city, province or even country. On the other hand, a smaller group might give better information about a specific area or classing or even status in a certain place or time.

These groups could be societies themselves. Societies are merely just humans grouped by distinguishable differences in culture, mind, history, relationship, and teachings. It appears to be a complicated system of organization, but it is no different in culture, religion, or role/status in its way of defining and dedicating answers to truth. It can be used to find common grounds and further separate viewpoints and information from larger groupings. Societies are very important groups of people, both to the real world and to sociology.

The fourth important item is socialization. Socialization is the way of converting or forming into the very definitions of society. This is a great way to show how humans differentiate from other animals. The complexity of our societies and groups is what defines us as humans, accounted with our rationality of course. Our interaction with each other is at a much more vital and intricate level. We go beyond the instinctive world and step into rationality. This is what makes our forms of communication, our languages, our social behaviors the way they are. This is what makes us so easily adaptable in the world. We are so heavily reliant on some form of socialization, that to think of world without it would mean thinking of a world without humans. Without it there would be no structure, no balance, nor order to our ways. We would be almost like primitive homo sapiens and other ancient races of man, only worse because we would be going from socialization and not towards it.

The fifth major factor in sociology is race and ethnicity. Like culture and religion, race can play an important role to a society and its social structure. A certain race can bring benefits to itself in one place while another can be discriminated against with equality. Even still, one race can experience both extremes throughout the world and even in the same proximity. Races, ethnicities and groups can be broken down into majority and minority. This is like most social classing. Majority refers to the more populace or the ones that have the most power in that given area. Minority is just in the opposite, referring to the weaker of the two either size/numbers or politics/power.

It is important to note the difference between race and ethnicity here. Race refers to the grouping of people through biological similarities and histories while ethnicity is created from both racial and cultural ties, making it not necessarily inherit in that it's physically in a person's blood, but inherit in that it is so tightly woven to the history of the person and his/her people that it has been a kind of grouping. Though there are some that will deny races exist at all, scientists have generally agreed on there being only three races. Humans in general assume or at least say there are many more, confusing both races and ethnicity with each other and other groups. By the common human's understanding of the word race, it is so misunderstood that it has no biological reference whatsoever. But on scientific terms, race would require an evolutionary viewpoint to accept it as been true.

The sixth item and factor is gender. Gender plays an important part in sociology like any of the humane sciences. There is a definite difference between man and woman. This is the case both physically and mentally (though in some instances the two are interrelated by definition in psychology). Sex is the more scientific look upon the situation, while gender is the social. While both imply the two different forms of sexual creatures, male and female, the word sex tends to just refer to this while gender also implies the identity created by this distinction in both society and cultures.

There are numerous other factors to sociology, but these are six of the most important and first focused on when researching across the world. In truth, the structure of society, of mankind and all things it has created, is a complex and delicate one. Each piece is carefully placed, woven, tied and held there by another. So tight they are that if one falls it is hard to tell how many will follow suit. Just as much as we can not say what event will move us in the next direction, we can not know what event will slow us down, stop us, or even be our downfall. Sociology can only understand the here and now.

What Is an Autoresponder and Why Should I Care? (Hint: It Affects Your Bottom Line)

This is the first of a series of posts dedicated to a technology called autoresponders. The idea here is to help you become familiar with what an autoresponder is, how they work, and how they make your life easier. On to the first post. Before I go any further you may see autoresponder spelled differently on different sites. It can be two words (i.e., auto responder); it can be hyphenated (i.e., auto-responder); or it can be a single, compound word (i.e., autoresponder). Search Wikipedia.com for autoresponder and you will see it as a single word. Search Dictionary.com for autoresponder as as single word and you won't get a result at all. Neither will you for auto-responder or auto responder. Regardless of how you see it spelled, we are talking about the same technology. Furthermore, I will be using it as a single compound word, because that is how most people (and companies) use it. Perform a Google Search on the term, "autoresponder," and you will see what I am talking about.

What is an auto-responder, and why should I care? By definition, an autoresponder might seem like the easiest online technology to use. I mean, it does just what it says: responds automatically (to emails). Besides email, autoresponders are being incorporated into websites so website owners can easily manage subscriptions, posts, online orders, inquiries and electronic mailing lists (aka "lists" or "your list".) The biggest claim to fame for the autoresponder is its ability improve and increase online sales and make online marketing efforts easier to manage on many different levels.

The Autoresponder's Early Days Whether or not you realize it, you have encountered an autoresponder at some point. Originally, it was a system that sent notifications when an email couldn't be sent to the electronic address specified, even after many attempts. In these early cases, the autoresponder send a message (email) back the sender that his or her original message was not delivered. This message also included a few different reasons for the error. Have you ever received a "kick back" error because you sent and email to a wrong email address? Then you have encountered an autoresponder message.

The Many Uses for the Autoresponder At it's core, the autoresponder helps tackle several tasks that used to be done manually. No one sits in front of their computer all the time (except me! lol!). So you can't answer messages as quickly or as often as you want. Even with smartphones and our always connected nature, it's not possible to handle all of this electronic communication manually. The autoresponder helps build and maintain your relationships with existing clients and potential clients (aka: prospects) who are interested in your company, product, or service. Autoresponders also help answer repetitive questions. We tend to get tired quickly of answering the same question over and over. Want proof? Think about any 3 to 5 year old child that is told no to the request for ice cream or a puppy. They keep asking until they get the answer they want. Another classic example that everyone knows is, "Are we there yet?" Following where I am going with this? An autoresponder can provide answers automatically, without you having to answer from scratch every time. It makes you more efficient. Would you rather focus on income producing activities or responding to email questions about the various colors of your widgets?

Simple and Complex Autoresponders Some autoresponders offer emails stating that the recipient cannot answer your email (out of office responses) and will get back to you as soon as they can. This type of autoresponse is also used acknowledge that your email or message was received, though not yet answered. Nowadays, autoresponders are much more intelligent. Timed responses time can be set and sent out at specific intervals. It can send one message or a hundred messages in a day, week, or month after the pre-written messages are added to the queue. In fact, autoresponders can be configured with years and years worth of messages that can be sent whenever you wish. With this level of intelligence companies can organize newsletters, responses, sales letters, and many other events far in advance and then schedule the messages to be sent at a specific time. Many companies now offer autoresponder services. Many business owners subscribe to such a service because they are flexible and offer month to month contracts that can easily be terminated if they are not needed any more. It's always wise to check out a few different services before deciding on one for your needs. Some of the more popular services are:

GetResponse (getresponse.com) AWeber (aweber.com ConstantContact (constantcontact.com) iContact (icontact.com) MailChimp (mailchimp.com)

These are just a few of the services that I have personally tried over the years. I have finally settled on MailChimp and AWeber for my sites, lists, and campaigns. There are many that you can choose from, depending upon your needs. All of the above, with the exception of MailChimp are paid services that you can subscribe to. MailChimp doesn't charge if you have no more than 2000 people on a list and are not sending more than 12,000 emails to them. Before joining any service, make sure you try out the service and ensure that the company is credible. Be smart out there and don't go with just any autoresponder service because there is a very real danger that they are sending out spam messages or even worse, selling your email list to other companies. So do some research, call up these companies and ask them questions. If you have any questions about today's lesson or need any other assistance, please feel free to contact me at anytime using my contact info below. I'm always happy to be of assistance. There will be more to go over in the next few days about how to use your selected autoresponder effectively for your business. Scan your inbox or RSS feed in the next few days so you can start your next lesson soon. The next topic will be focused on how to choose the right type of autoresponder service for your needs.

Until then, Keep your Light shining Bright,

Shawn

Investing In Real Estate - Consider The Zarnowitz Rule And Other Factors

What is the Zarnowitz Rule and what is the connection between this odd sounding rule and your decision to invest in real estate? Well, the Zarnowitz Rule has been named after Victor Zarnowitz. He was an economist in the University of Chicago and did pioneering work in business-cycle analysis. In simple words, the Zarnowitz Rule says that steepness of an economic recovery normally mirrors the steepness of the economic decline. An economy that slumps into a deep recession will enjoy an equally sharp recovery. So, what is the connection between this rule and your real estate investments?

Well, real estate investments contributed 6.2% of USA's GDP in 2005. By early 2011, this figure had fallen to 2.4%. This represented a very steep fall of close to 62% in a span of just six years. To put things in perspective, the share of real estate investments in US in early 50s was 7.4%. In the late 60s and early 70s, this had come down to 5.6%, a 24% fall over a span of two decades. So, there is absolutely no doubt that the housing market has been hit by a very sharp recession.

Now, according to the Zarnowitz Rule, the recovery in the housing market should be equally sharp. Economists are of the opinion that the share of real estate investment in the GDP may return to 5.6-5.8% by 2015. If this happens, it would indicate a spectacular recovery in the housing market in a span of just three years.

Of course, one cannot blindly make real estate investments on the basis of this rule alone. However, one should understand that business-cycle analysis indicates a good run for the US real estate market.

Another important factor to be considered is the performance of property market related entities in USA. Freddie Mac has seen an increase in net profits for the fourth consecutive quarter. Net profits have increased in every quarter starting from September 2011. This increase is being attributed to the improvements in the housing and property market in USA.

Recent surveys indicate that USA has become the top choice for property investments amongst foreign investors. This is the first time since December 2011 that USA has occupied the top spot. It moved from third to second place a few months ago and displaced Spain to occupy the first position.

This means that you can consider adopting an optimistic approach towards the option of investing in housing and properties. Of course, you cannot invest money at random and hope to earn good returns. Further, you cannot ignore local factors, which continue to affect market sentiments. Investing money in states like California, Georgia and Michigan, which have witnessed significant improvement in the housing market, can prove beneficial.

A conservative investor may prefer consider the option of waiting for the recovery to be strengthened further before investing. It depends on your risk tolerance levels. However, there is no denying that the local, national, and international sentiments towards the US property market are very optimistic.

Medicare's Supplement Insurance Program - Medigap

Medicare Supplement Insurance -Medigap- is a private health insurance policy that is designed to supplement Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). Medigap is provided by private health insurance companies but run by Medicare. Medigap helps pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare does not cover ("gaps" such as copayments, coinsurance and deductibles) as well as certain services that Medicare doesn't cover at all. If you have Original Medicare and a Medigap Policy, Medicare pays its share of the Medicare approved amounts for covered health care costs, followed by your Medigap policy's payment.

Every Medigap policy must follow both federal and state laws. Medigap policies are standardized and identified by letters A-L. Each policy must offer the same basic benefits no matter which health insurance carrier sells it, the only difference will be the price each carrier offers.

Policy A offers the basic and core benefits while the other eleven policies contain the basic benefits as well as a few additional benefits. Plan A offers the following benefits:

Part A Hospital Coinsurance for Days 61-90 Part A Hospital Lifetime Reserve Coinsurance for Days 91-150 365 Lifetime Hospital days beyond Medicare coverage Part B 20% Coinsurance Part A and Part B 3 pint blood deducible

The remaining policies (B through L) offer a different combination of the following benefits:

Part A Skilled Nursing Facility Coinsurance for days 21-100 Part A hospital deductible Part B deductible Foreign Travel Emergency coverage At Home Recovery Preventive medical care

When you buy a Medigap policy, you must have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. You will have to pay a premium for both Medicare Part B and your Medigap policy.

However, be advised that many benefits are not covered under any Medigap, including:

Dental Care Hearing Aids Prescription drug costs that exceed $3,000 per year Private duty nursing Skilled Nursing care after 100 days Vision Care

How to Choose the Best Vision Care Plans?

Can anyone imagine life without eyes? Everyone would agree that life without eyes is the most horrifying thing that could ever happen to anyone. With the sickest of lifestyles that we are leading in front of TVs, computers and the ill eating habits that accompany, our eyes have turned to be vulnerable to all sorts of vision problems. It has become a common sight seeing kids as tender as four to eight years of age group wearing spectacles. Gone are the days, when people wearing spectacles at a very young age are heckled, in fact it's the other way round. People not seen wearing spectacles don't fall under the geek community. In such a precarious situation it's high time that people should start thinking and nurture the right vision of enrolling into a vision care program. At the same time, one has to select the right vision care program that suits the needs of the family.

Smartness lies in identifying the best suitable vision care program amongst hundreds of similar programs flooding the market every day. Falling prey to these well disguised programs is the most obvious mistake committed by many. While choosing, one has to make sure that it should be a comprehensive program that covers entire family's needs without any uninvited hidden charges that usually piggyback on them. The trick in finding that perfect program lies in the neutral approach without any prejudices whatsoever towards any particular company or product. Sometimes even the best of programs in the market who promise the best of the best service fail to cater to the varied needs of the customers. They fail in adapting and understanding the constantly changing needs.

So, what is that success mantra which eludes many in attracting customers towards these programs even with the best of the companies sharing the industry? After studying and spending lot of time and resources in studying the buying patterns of the customers and the sales graph of healthcare companies, industry experts have come to the conclusion that the pricing strategy, the relevance factor entwined with the customer service are the binding factors that keep customers patronized to a particular program. There are companies which have recognized these patterns very early and have succeeded in tapping the gaps that we are talking about in these programs. These programs focus on adapting as per customer's needs and when we say customer needs, it may span from rendering service as per the chosen timings of the customers to the customization of packages as per the repaying ability of the customer.

With such evolutionary plans around, one really has tough time in finding an excuse for not being part of these programs. So better late than never, go find yourself a vision care plan which suits your needs and endorse the idea that we are slowly but surely moving towards possessing the foresight (not the eye sight) required to forge ahead in life.

How to Read a Person Like a Book, A Humorous Look at Social Science

Looking for instruction? Read a book.

Looking for love or commitment? Read a person.

In western civilization books are read left to right.

Mid-eastern books are read right to left.

If it's Chinese, read top to bottom.

Read a person in any or all of the above directions. Just read as many of the attributes of a person (see below) as you can in whatever time allotted you.

There are 10 attributes to observe in reading a person. You may know of more but these 10 will suffice to tell you all you want and need. Each item can be scored producing a person-revealing value (PRV.) Then, massaging in a "finagle" factor, you can know that the person you have read is honest and sincere or mean-spirited and evil. Never forget that the person you are reading is probably reading you!

* * * For instructional purposes, we shall assume that you and the person you are reading are both well rested, undistracted and psychologically at or near normal (whatever that is.)

Meaningful reading of a person, like watching a movie, occurs on two levels: Text and Subtext. If you have any interest at all in the person you are reading, both are important; read them and evaluate.

Text is verbal: what the person says. By speaking, that person guides the direction of conversation. Text is usually completely controlled and voluntary.

Whether spoken, screamed or whispered, observe: Is the person's "Text" frank, candid, and honest? Is the tone formal/professional, or familiar/caring? Depending upon that person's sincerity, the uttered text may be 0 to 180 degrees from the subtext. It may be truth; it may be lies. How can you know the difference?--Read on.

Subtext is truth. It is involuntary, observable body language and/or autonomic physiologic reactions. To comprehend the true resolve of the person you are reading, observe the following attributes of subtext (AST) and know their meaning. Read in no predetermined order; try to be calm and comfortable. Then reassemble the AST's to learn the true story, the real plot.

If you know what you want from the person you have just read and where he/she is coming from, you can adjust your own text to express your motives, but you still won't have any control over your AST's than the person you have read.

To read a person like a book, listen to the text and observe the AST's.

Attributes of Subtext (AST)

Voice: Is your person speaking with a high pitch and staccato delivery? (No points) Is she hesitance, interrupted by frequent throat clearing? (No points) Is her speech easy, in a natural voice at a speed geared to comprehension, successful and honest communication? (3 points)

Eyes: Is your subject blinking, squinting or shifting? (No points) Is she looking away from you? (No points) Does she maintain eye contact with you? (3 points)

Brows/Forehead: Are they high and arched with furrowed forehead? (No points) Are they squeezed together with a wrinkled forehead? (No points) Or are they relaxed and natural (3 points)

Nose: Are the nostrils flaring? (No points) Is she sniffling? (No points) Is her nose calm natural? (3 points)

Mouth and Cheeks: Are her lips tight on her teeth? (No points) Are her cheeks ballooned? (No points) Does she have relaxed full lips with a smile? (3 points)

Skin: Is her face and neck flushed and/or damp? (No points) or warm and dry? (3 points)

Breathing: Does she frequently hold her breath or breath fast and shallow? (No points) Is her breathing easy and even? (3 points)

Hands: Are her hands fidgety or tremulous? (No points) the palms sweaty? (No points) Does she keep her hands calm, still? (3 points)

Legs and Feet: Are they shuffling, shifting or tapping? (No points). Are her legs crossed bouncing crossed leg? (No points) Does she keep her feet calm and parallel? (3 points)

Head and neck: Is her head held still, stony and rigid or restless, bobbing? (No points) Does she appear relaxed? (3 points)

Finagle Factors (FF)

The manner in which you read a person will depend on some of your own personality and character traits as well as person you are reading. For example, if either of you is:

Autistic: You won't or can't communicate.

Dyslexic: You transpose value of numbered responses.

Attention Deficit: You frequently distracted from items observed and have to re-read or may not have finished reading your person in time to reply.

Passive-aggressive: You smile, nod your head and don't listen to or read the your person; You're too busy planning revenge.

Bi-polar: If your mood is high, anything in text or subtext isn't so bad or can be fixed by behavior modification (Yoga; Meditation; Conversion to Buddhism.) If your mood is low, it doesn't matter; you want to get back to bed.

Frightened or Angry: You can't listen to or read subtext.

Primary Depression, Grief or Guilt: You feel like you are sinking in quicksand and don't want to hear the virtues of sinking; the moral high ground of drowning. You don't want to meet with a "support group" of fifty people going under in their own quicksand. All you want is a lifeline!

Schizophrenic: This depends upon whether you swallowed your medicine or just threw it into your underwear again.

SCORING

Add all the points.

If the total is 0-10, the person you have read is lying, leading you up the primrose path to Prozac. Beware!

If you get 11-20, the person you have read is uncertain, vacillating, on the path to purgatory. Decide if that's where you want to go.

If the person scores 21-30, that person is true, loving and forthwith and wants to take you along to heaven.

THE FINAL SCORE

Finally, for any suspected single finagle factor (FF) on the part of either, deduct fifteen from total.

If two or more FF's are present between you, deduct 30 from total and make every effort to move on to another person to read where you may get luckier * * *

Data Disasters - Horror Stories of Data Loss

The threat of data loss exists with almost every click of your mouse. Life in the online world can be dangerous. Smart businesses will do whatever is required to minimize that risk.

Have you ever lost all of the data on a floppy disk and had to redo an entire afternoon's work? Perhaps you have rendered a music or game CD unusable because of a tiny scratch? Maybe you have experienced a full fledged hard drive meltdown that resulted in gigabytes of lost data and months, even YEARS of lost effort.

The "worst case scenario" happened to me a few years ago. I received a call from a friend informing me that my home had been broken into and the burglars had not only stolen the electronics in the living room but had also taken the house's PCs. I learned the hard way that data backup is something that every computer user who has important data on their hard drive cannot live without. Whether you simply purchase an external drive that you can connect via USB or Firewire, or sign up for offsite secure data backup, make sure you take steps to guarantee that your data is safe and sound, even if the worst happens to your computer hardware.

It doesn't hit you right away when you no longer have access to your data. The first things that come to mind are the expensive hardware that went into building your machine. Maybe you had a nice flat panel monitor or a state of the art video card for playing the latest games. While it can be very disappointing to lose expensive tech goodies like these it is still no comparison to losing those zeros and ones etched into every user's hard drive. Hardware can nearly always be replaced, even at no cost to you if you have insurance, but lost data is gone forever. There is no way to recover data that you have not backed up if you lose the original media it was stored on.

In my case, I was not using offsite secure data backup, or any kind of backup for that matter. My backup was about six months old and sitting on a tape drive in my closet. When those thieves walked off with my machine they left with not only an excellent gaming platform but also my entire web design portfolio, numerous customized versions of my resume, THOUSANDS of MP3 files that I had ripped from CDs (many of which I had lost the original CD for), Microsoft Money files, and thousands of digital photographs that are impossible to replace.

Take a moment and think about all the important digital files you have on your computer and ask yourself if it is worth investing a little of your time and money in an online remote backup solution to make sure that data is available for you for a lifetime.

Your DATA is your LIFE. Protect it!
